During the last few years, I've been getting a fairly frequent request, usually at the end of each semester when we do our review:
"Dr.P, when are you going to just write a book about 'how to write' where you could put all this stuff we're learning?"
My answer, usually with a mixture of gratitude (at being asked) and embarrassment (that I haven't already done it) has always been that it's a great idea, but that I simply haven't had the time.
I just did.
While you guys have been looking over my other guides for your assignments, I've been hard at work compiling all my "greatest hits" of all kinds of stylistic dos and dont's for you. If you look over on your right, you'll see that the resulting draft of this guide now lives on my blog, where, without hunting through old class posts, you can now see all of the most useful stuff I teach. Keep in mind, I decided to go beyond our in-class reviews, making a longer document full of examples that can serve as a set of stand-alone explanations for these concepts: it looks a bit daunting as a result. (also, since it's an HTML page, all those document formatting details, that make it clearer to read, make it slow to load, so expect to need a little patience each time you download it.) I hope, however, that as you get to read through it, and notice all the things we've worked on previously, this will really help you cement your understanding of all these great tips and techniques.
