We're trying to come up with really clear and specific Main ideas to create good Topic sentences so that we don't just say a bunch of vague, obvious things.
We're going to use this general principle for focusing each TS/MI:
Start with
- "What the government does,"
then make more specific by narrrowing with
-When or under what circumstances do they do this?
-How or in what way do they do this?
-What specific goal do they seem to be trying to achieve by doing so?
IF you want a step-by-step template try this:
"The government does...(this general action)
"Whenever they want to... (at this time/or/when they need to solve this general problem)"
"They do this specifically by (doing this specific thing)"
"In order to (achieve this specific effect of this particular action)"
WARNING: make sure that the last "why?" is specific to the action in your "how?" DON'T just restate the first 2 general ideas!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR WEEKEND OUTLINE:
1.Use the template above to complete 3 TS cards, each pertaining to a DIFFERENT WAY the Oceania government gets and maintains power. Make sure each card contains a WHAT/WHEN/HOW/WHY
2. Color code each of the parts of all 3 TSs cards
3. Gather three examples from different scenes that SHOW each TS (9 total)
4 Check to see if your examples match your topic sentence(s) by color coding your examples to match the ideas in your TSs.
5. If they don't match, either find a new detail, or keep tweaking the topic sentence until they match as a paragraph.
Sort them into labeled piles, with matching TS card, then bring for class sharing on projector. (for practical reasons, this won't be anonymous, so bring your best work, and a constructive attitude as we look at these together!)
