English 9 Paragraph for Friday, 11/12

1. Re-read the first and last chapters of the novel (Of Mice and Men). We already identified some striking similiarities and subtle differences between the two chapters.

2. Continue to identify new similarities and differences that you notice (the same way we did in class).

3. Write a paragraph response (at least 5-7 sentences - but I would love it if you wrote more!) to the two chapters in relationship to each other. I am interested in your original thoughts and reactions about these two chapters!

***Some guiding questions that may help you write your response:

How does the last chapter "set you up" for Lennie's death?

Pick one concrete example that is similar in both chapters and explore the differences and why those differences are important (for example: the wind in the trees).

How do the descriptions of the setting influence how you feel about Lennie's death. Make a connection between Lennie's death and something that happens in the setting.

What is significant about the first and last chapter being so similar? (Remember our discussion - Lennie and George end up in the same situation, running from job to job, but this time, it's different.)

How do the subtle differences between the first and last chapters foreshadow or parallel the end of the novel (How George kills Lennie).
