Short Friday (11/20) reading-Note assignments

English 9
Read "Fish Cheeks" (begins on 176) and "Two Kinds" (begins on 474)
by Amy Tan
INSTRUCTIONS
After reading, create DE notes, like those we did in class:
Left column: :20 Details of things character does, says, or thinks (notice that "says" or "thinks" require quoted text) (do no more than five from "Fish Cheeks," with the rest from "Two Kinds"

Right hand Column: AQ--What does this detail show about the character? (consider what it might show about her personality, motivations, feelings, reactions, etc.)
Objectives:
-make short, but clear, specific observations
-the inference on the right of each detail should follow logically from the left, not be a redundant restatement, or a different point.

ENGLISH 10
Read, from "China" section, pp. 503-549, especially the historical descriptions, biographies, and literature.
INSTRUCTIONS: Complete 15 DEs:
On the left, put specific observations about interesting "facts about" these poets, Chinese History, and the literature of China. (These must be drawn from across all the sections; no more than 3-4 from any one passage or excerpt)
On the right, clarify the main point of "what makes this fact interesting," demonstrating the "compared to what?" rule we talked about on 11/12; your goal is to clarify what is important about this fact based on how it's different from, surprising compared to, distinct from, or somehow unique from, what it might be.
